Margot Robbie Barbie Doll Review

Margot Robbie Barbie Doll

Hello everyone, I’m Vanessa Christina, and today I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on one of the official Barbie movie dolls, inspired by Margot Robbie’s portrayal of the iconic character. As a long-time fan of Barbie and an avid collector, my anticipation for this release has been building, especially with the new Barbie movie around the corner.

Packaging: A Nostalgic Appeal

Firstly, the packaging of this doll deserves applause. The vintage Barbie logo, elegantly displayed, brings a wave of nostalgia. The box is adorned with a Barbie’s dream house image and a multilingual greeting from Barbie land, adding to the global appeal. The first glimpse of Margot Robbie as Barbie on the packaging reaffirms her perfect casting for the role.

The Doll’s First Impression

Upon unboxing, the doll is dressed in a pink and gingham Kingdom dress, a nod to Barbie’s rich history. Initially, I was skeptical, but the doll in person was more impressive. However, the face and the bangs were a letdown. The bangs, in particular, didn’t match the curtain style seen in the movie, which was disappointing given the significance of accuracy for movie-inspired dolls.

Facial Features and Likeness

A key aspect of any celebrity-inspired doll is the likeness, and here, the doll fell short. It appeared as though a different face (Millie’s) was superimposed on Margot Robbie’s, which was a startling mismatch. The doll’s jewelry was a redeeming feature, closely resembling what Robbie wore on-screen. However, minor details like the shape of the buckle on her belt missed the mark.

Attire and Accessories

The shoes provided with the doll were fashionable but had fitting issues. The doll’s hair type was a favorite – round, long, and wavy – but the style didn’t quite match Robbie’s look in the movie. The pink bow on her head, while a cute addition, lacked the detailed gingham pattern seen in the film.

The Dress and Body Type

The dress, made of polyester with a printed gingham pattern, felt softer and more appealing in person. The pleats allowed for dynamic posing, adding to the doll’s charm. A thoughtful inclusion was the fabric underwear, a detail often overlooked in dolls. However, the dress could have been better tailored at the waist to enhance the vintage-inspired look. The doll used an articulated Fashionista body, which, while not my personal favorite, offered decent posability.

Customization: Transforming the Doll

Determined to improve the doll, I embarked on a customization journey. The bangs were the first to be modified, a challenging task given their thickness and styling. After removing the bangs, the doll’s face looked more appealing, prompting a complete reroot of the hair with a matching tone of Saran hair.

Repainting: Bringing Margot Robbie to Life

Stripping the original face paint with acetone revealed a canvas with great potential. The repaint process began with mapping out features using watercolor pencils, focusing on capturing Robbie’s distinctive eyebrows and expressive blue eyes. The lips were painted a warm berry pink, a stark contrast to the original light pink. Blush and catchlights in the eyes added the final touches to bring the doll to life.

Finalizing the Customization

After curling the new hair to form bangs, the doll was assembled on a Made to Move body for enhanced posability. Careful trimming of the bangs and placing the bow in the correct position completed the transformation.

Conclusion and Reflection

The end result was a doll that bore a much closer resemblance to Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Barbie. This project highlighted the potential hidden in the doll, which was unlocked with the right customization. The process also brought to light my anticipation for future releases from the Barbie movie, promising exciting costume designs and varied looks.

Final Thoughts

This customized doll now holds a special place in my collection, showcasing the transformative power of doll customization. While the initial version of the doll was somewhat underwhelming, the final customized version is a testament to the potential these dolls have with a little creativity and effort.

This Barbie movie doll, retailing at $24.97, is a mixed bag. While it offers a decent base, it requires significant customization to truly capture the essence of Margot Robbie’s portrayal. The journey of transforming this doll was both challenging and rewarding, and I’m eager to see what other dolls this movie will inspire.
